Fan Art Contest 2016 (Time Extension!!!)

Fan Art Contest 2016 (Time Extension!!!) 1494 959 andrew

Important Announcement!!!

We have received SO MANY fan art submissions in the final days of our contest, please check them out! On top of this, many of the art groups that we actively post on have members who felt like they “missed out” on the contest. So many people said they totally would have entered this contest if only they knew about it in the first place.

We are officially extending the contest by 1 week. The new contest ending date is 9/19/16.

The official DeviantArt group for the competition is here!

Increasing Winners

In order to be fair to those who have already entered before the original date, we are going to be adding MORE WINNERS to this contest! We will be adding two additional winners to this contest. These two additional winners can apply to any category in our original list of categories:

  • Best Overall Artwork (1 x winner)
  • Best Fit for “Tiny” Theme (2 x winners)
  • Most Unique Style (1 x winner)
  • Creator’s Pick (1 x winner)

On top of these original 5 winning categories, we will also be adding 2 extra that can apply to ANY CATEGORY!

7 Winners Total

It might not sound like a lot of winners, however we had never expected to have received as many submissions as we did! Had we known we were going to get over 25 submissions for this contest we would have ordered way more wallscrolls! Please understand, these wallscrolls do cost us money, and as of right now TinyWars is literally bringing in $0 in revenue. This contest, the wallscrolls, are all investments into our marketing strategy.

deviant-art-submissions-2016

And I have to say that I am really pleased with how great this contest has turned out. Our fans are incredibly awesome for making fan art for this contest! I would share some of our favorite submissions, however I feel like that might seem a bit unfair to entrants. We will wait til the contest officially ends on 9/19/16 before announcing the winners, AND honorable mentions!

Thank you!

Thank you so much for entering our contest, and thank you to the new entrants who now have 10 days to complete an entry for this contest! Good luck everyone!

The official DeviantArt group for the competition is here!

Be sure to check out the original official terms and conditions before entering!

TinyWars WallScroll Quality Review

TinyWars WallScroll Quality Review 869 1080 andrew

We just received our first wallscroll sample, we inspected the sample and here is our review!

SPECS
– 9.5 inch width
– 13 inch height (approximate)
– Plastic and fabric construction

Scroll up front - Copy

Print Quality

Scroll Close Up

The print quality on the fabric is really nice! We really like how the colors came out nice and vivid. Very true to the original RGB color image, a bit more contrast but very nice!

Scroll Close Up 2

This is definitely the type of item we would love to hold a giveaway for, fan art contest, etc. We might also consider selling these at conventions and other events. Personally, as someone who has attended many conventions, I would never pay for a paper poster! (Unless the artwork is super awesome!!!)

Scroll Close Up 3

One thing that I was concerned about was the print quality of the text. My concerns were correct as the text did not come out as sharply as the rest of the image. This may be due to the fact that the text is on the very edge of the image, perhaps the fabric or something is stretched? I didn’t expect the text to come out super sharp, but I also did not expect the details of the face to be as sharp as they are! (See above image.)

Text Quality

Scroll Text

From far away, the text appears perfectly fine. Of course this is a very small poster so some may come up for a closer inspection. As you can see on the “S” and the words “software,” the text is not exactly what I would consider sharp, however I’m amazed that the words “software”, as tiny as they are, are still readable! This wallscroll really did go beyond my expectations in terms of print quality.

Size

Scroll Size

We chose to go with such a small size because we knew if the quality of the print came out well on such a tiny wallscroll, then we can expect even better on a larger print! (With less cost for the sample.) I am in favor of ordering more of these smaller scrolls due to the size as well as cost.

We can sell these for a good price that isn’t too expensive and also many people will have more room to place a smaller poster than a larger one. A large one could serve as a great giveaway prize though!

Our HQ is getting more and more bright as we get physical marketing materials in, preparing for the story demo launch.

Fabric Quality

Scroll Fabric Quality

The quality of the fabric on the edges is a bit jagged, compared to some of the AAA wallscrolls that I own, I can say that this is certainly of lesser quality than those AAA wallscrolls that have very straight and clean edges. For me, this isn’t a deal killer, at least not for a scroll of this size. I would expect the larger print scrolls to have straighter edges, possible because the fabric for the larger ones are pre-cut. (Just an assumption, we’ll have to see.)

Fabric Thickness

The thickness of the fabric is nice, definitely very similar to the AAA posters. It’s not translucent unless you place a light behind it. The thickness of the fabric is very nice, I feel confident that it won’t rip or get damaged if it was pulled or blown in the wind.

Plastic Quality

The plastic parts of the scroll are what you would expect from a tiny wallscroll. Very light and the end caps fell off pretty easily. No string included which is a bummer, but it does include little hooks which I used as anchors for tape. Who needs strings when you can use tape? I guess a string would have been nice, though I am not a fan of poking holes in the walls, especially for rented office space!

Overall Quality

Poster Blurry

Overall, I am very pleased with how this wallscroll turned out. It’s a really nice piece, the artwork was done by the newest addition to the team, Ayasal. I will definitely be ordering more, and I am strongly considering some variations.

wallscroll helppp

#2 looks like a attractive choice, so I think we’ll order more scrolls in both variation #1 and #2. Let us know your thoughts on the wallscroll and if you would enter a fan art competition to win one of these?

All Our Main Character Have Fan Art!

All Our Main Character Have Fan Art! 1920 712 andrew

Whooo this is really awesome, all of our main characters finally have at least 1 fan art! That is really, really cool. Honestly, this is something we would have never expected since the game, the demo, isn’t even released yet! It is so cool that we have managed to build an awesome fan base that interacts with us and I really hope we deliver an awesome product for you guys!

Here are the main girls:

In a previous posting, we mentioned that Eve and Kumo were the only two characters who haven’t received any fan art yet. By some miracle both Eve and Kumo received fan arts the very next week! Really awesome!

There are more than these characters in TinyWars, but these are the main girls! There will be some side characters, villains, and monsters. You know we have succeeded when even the monsters from the game get fan art!

TinyWars Fan Art Competition

candy wall scroll tinywars wallscroll

Pictured above is a sample wallscroll mockup. We have ordered an actual wallscroll and once it arrives we’ll see the quality and everything. I really want to host some kind of art competition and giveaway. I want to give out a couple of wallscrolls and other prizes to people who make fan art for us.

This competition should be timed at some point before the demo will release, so we can build some traction before the demo launches! We have received a ton of positive feedback on our social media pages from fans who said they would totally enter a fan art competition!

There is no official competition dates or deadlines yet, will post an update when the wallscroll arrives.

wallscroll helppp

I was having some trouble deciding which wallscroll would be best, after asking the fans, a lot of them said #2 was fine, and #1 was good also. I think I will end up ordering both of them to see in person, but for now, the sample that we ordered was from #1.

Thanks for following the development of TinyWars. Unfortunately I have no significant updates to report on the demo progress, but it is getting closer and closer to completion everyday. Want to make sure we release the demo this year but we also want to make sure it is polished up a bit and presentable, optimized, etc!

What Makes TinyWars Different from Other Tower Defense Games?

What Makes TinyWars Different from Other Tower Defense Games? 1911 1071 andrew

We are at a 30% completion mark for our upcoming gameplay demo, very exciting to see the project progress everyday! We estimate 30% completion based on the fact that we have done 5 out of the 15 waves that will be in the demo.

Planning wise, the content of the waves has been planned out, but they have not been coded into the demo yet. What sounds awesome on paper can often need a lot more tweaking when put into the game.

How is TinyWars Revolutionizing Tower Defense

…Not sure if “revolutionizing” is the right word, but we certainly are building upon a tried and true genre. Tower defense has been done many times before us, from really basic app games to some AAA titles, but these days it seems to be a stagnant, unpopular niche genre. With TinyWars we hope to build upon a lot of cool features from our favorite TD games and inject some of our own original ideas into it.

Cool Features to Expect in the Demo!

3maryemotion

Mary will have more poses in the final demo than what is seen in the gameplay video (above)

Path Shifting

The battlefield is constantly changing, anything can happen at any time that could stir up the  battle and shift the course of the enemies. You need to be able to adapt your strategy at any time, don’t get too comfortable with your tower placement, be willing to sell units when necessary to adapt to the changing battlefield.

In the demo: This will happen in the demo regarding the strawberry. (spoilers)

Upgrade animation GIF

Updated upgrade animation

TinyWars

What is a “TinyWar?” TinyWars happen periodically during the game, they can happen at any time, in any level, so be on your guard! A TinyWar is a phase in the game when “dark magic” takes over. Normally there are breaks in between waves where the player can take time to plan and even “retry” waves that they didn’t do too well on. However, during a “tinywar” that will not be available, you must complete the entire set of waves and if you fail, you can only restart form the beginning of the tinywar.

In the demo: This will happen when a certain character makes an appearance in the demo. (spoilers)

Unlimited Upgrades

This is still a concept we have been experimenting with, but limiting the unit upgrades to only 3 – 5 phases is what most tower defense games do. We have been juggling with the idea of having unlimited amount of upgrades, different upgrade “paths”, or transformation upgrades that totally change the way the character behaves. The last one is nothing new, we’ve seen it before in other games, but I am not sure if it has been utilized to its fullest extent! We’ll see about this concept.

In the demo: This feature is currently not planned for the demo.

Gameplay

Lastly we want to create a tower defense game where players are rewarded for having good strategies! Not merely building the most towers or the most powerful towers. In tower defense, placement should be a key component of the game and we have units that specifically react to certain units. This is something you must figure out as you play, and don’t worry, the logic behind which units react to what type of attacks is anything but randomized! There has been a lot of thought put into the enemies and what they do.

What is this Blue Blob guy? Is he a placeholder?

Bad Guy GIF

Ah yes, you might have noticed this beautifully rendered “test demo enemy.” Throughout playing the demo countless times, we have grown quite fond of this character to be honest. He will be staying in the demo. Will he appear in the final game? Maybe not, but he’s staying in the demo and that’s final!

How Many Playable Units Will Be In the Demo?

Currently two, the Fire Witch (Kim), and the Melee Unit (Suzu).

Suzu Blink 3 Kim Blink 3

Will that be boring? No, because there is a lot of enemy types to fight against. Having a lot of unit types is cool, but having a lot of enemy types is far more interesting! Enemies should not be overlooked in a tower defense game!

Also this demo takes place in the “Grass World,” which is the first chapter in the TinyWars story. In that chapter these are the only two playable units. Each chapter unlocks more units, but we do want this demo to reflect some early gameplay of TinyWars. There’s just a lot of things relating to the story that we just can’t spoil! Trust me, you’re going to like the story a lot!

How Difficult Will the Demo be?

Oh man, we designed this demo to be accessible to everyone to be able to get into tower defense (surprisingly, a lot of people are not familiar with tower defense),  but we also created this demo to be like a little “challenge.” Challenge yourself, your friends, or people you know to actually beat the demo.

We said it would be easy and fun to pick up! We never said we would make it easy to beat. In fact, the final wave of the demo has been specifically designed to be a challenge. We’re trying to cram 100 units into the screen at once, we’ll see about that. But we will make sure it’s not easy to beat, or at least not easy to beat with a perfect score! (not taking any damage!)

We promise we will play through the demo ourselves to ensure that it is possible to beat without taking damage!

Is there Any Story in the Demo?

There will not be story related cutscenes in this demo, this is just a lighthearted demo for fun and to demonstrate the gameplay mechanics of TinyWars. However, there will be story “elements” in this demo. Mary’s personality will be presented, and some other hints might be made, but regarding the main story we just don’t have anything in this demo.

This is NOT to suggest that we don’t have the TinyWars story figured out! Oh no! The storyline for TinyWars has been written well in advanced of any gameplay or coding! By this we mean that all the main events and key plot points have been outlined in the story, this doesn’t mean all the lines have been set in stone and scripted fully, but the events have been pretty much set in stone!

The story is not shallow, nor generic, I can certainly promise that! It will be fun to follow, it’ll be a wild ride, and there will be some heart breaking moments for sure. Maybe one day TinyWars might get an anime deal! Who knows? But we’re getting way ahead of ourselves here… First thing is first, the gameplay demo!

Be on the look out, we are 30% done and progressing faster and faster now that many of the core mechanics have been implemented and lots of bugs have been addressed!

What platforms will the gameplay demo release on?

The gameplay demo will release on Windows PC for sure. Regarding mobile development, there still needs to be a lot of testing done to make sure device comparability is maximized. The game is fully responsive and should work (in theory) on any sized screen or device, BUT this has yet to be tested.

First the PC version of the game needs to be completed before we can even begin testing for mobile, I’m sure there will be many tweaks and adjustments to be made in order to get the mobile version running smoothly… Oh boy, I’m getting excited just thinking about it.
