First Level of Story Demo Design Complete

First Level of Story Demo Design Complete 2016 1317 andrew

I am pleased to announce that we have finalized the designs for the first level of the Story Demo! If you are unfamiliar with the Story Demo, it is basically the next big project we are working on. The story demo is intended to accurately represent the final product of the main TinyWars game, so the first level of the Story Demo should also reflect the first level of the full game.

Level Design

Pictured above are the art assets for the first level. These assets took about two months to fully design and built out. Part of the work was figuring out the exact look and color scheme we wanted for this level, the second part of the workload was actually designing and detailing all of the objects you see in the screenshot above.

The art assets here are not exactly the same as in-game level assets, as they still need to be optimized and created appropriately for game use. This includes turning the “floor” layer into ground tiles that can be repeated across the level as well as organizing some of the assets in a way that can be loaded and interacted with. So this is why the design of the first level is complete, the but actual first level of the game is not ready yet.

Old Designs

Here are some of the variants of this single level’s design. We have gone through quite a lot of variations from bright green daylight levels to duller designs, and finally to the design we think is key to this scene, both story wise and aesthetically.

UI Updates

On top of graphically refining the look and assets of the background elements, the “Summoning UI” has also been refined with a more minimalist approach to the initial visuals, followed by spectacular design and animation! It’s a lot more powerful this was as opposed to how it was before.

The Next Steps

Now that we have completed the design of the first level, what remains is to actually implement these assets into the game engine itself and start working with it. On top of the still design assets pictured above, there are animated assets that need to be worked out such as the light rays, dust particles, and other elements that can’t be seen in that still image alone.

We have come a long way with the design, graphics, and sound of our game. I am pleased to announce that many people have given us overwhelming positive responses from the above still screenshot posted. Visuals is a huge part of what people judge in a game, so there is no doubt in my mind that simply having good graphics will take the game a long way in terms of its reputation and respectability.

There is still more that needs to be worked out gameplay wise, and we will get to that in a future update once this firsts level is put into action!

Build Your Own Tower with TinyWars (June 2017 Update)

Build Your Own Tower with TinyWars (June 2017 Update) 733 522 andrew

I’ve spent the past few weeks coding out the new features of the game; quite possibly, one of the most complicated features of the game is implemented (partially). And this is the Inventory System and the Tower Building system!

I have put together this short video showing the new features in action!

The following post will explain in detail the new features.

Tower Builder

The tower builder is the screen that will be presented to the player prior to entering into any battle. This screen gives the player a brief description of the level as well as time to “prep” for the coming battle.

The Design

The UI follows the same design standards seen in previous screens, sharing the “paper” theme that the previous menu screens shared.

However, the UI is transformed slightly into a more “modern” flat looking design. As the player enters closer to actual gameplay, the design of the screen becomes more and more “modernized” and animated. This is the design path we have chosen in order to ready the player more and more for some “live” action in the game as opposed to the story telling style of the rest of the screens.

This ties into the story of TinyWars as this sort of magical book telling a story of the tiny people who once lived, and as we get into the battle scenes, the story starts to unravel and become alive!

Shaders are present and running on this part of the game. A blurring effect can be seen on the background items whenever the “item select” menu pops up. You may notice some jagged edges on the “blury” objects. It might not be the most perfect shader, but it doesn’t utilize many resources and we have tested it working perfectly on mobile devices. This is a big win for us as it allows us to leave the game 1:1 from PC to its mobile versions.

Function of the Tower Builder

The functionality of this feature is highly complex as it ties in with the inventory management system, which in general can be one of the most complicated parts of the game development. We do plan on having a lot of items in the game, so we had to code the system with scale-ability in mind. (Even if the upcoming Story Demo will have limited options, it will run off the same engine we’re building.)

There are three elements to the tower:

  • The Main Body
  • The “Accessory”
  • The Bottom

Clicking on any of the three item slot boxes next to the tower preview will bring up the “Item Selection” menu.

This screen displays all the current items the player has unlocked. Selecting the items will bring up their name and description. Each tower items has a shield icon next to it which displays it’s Shield Count: this adds to the total HP that the player will have with the tower configuration. As expected, higher HP items might not have as good perks as items with lower HP levels. Play your strategy wisely!

Different tower bodies will have different configurations for the accessories added to them.

Finally, the tower is deployed when the player hits the “Fight!” button.

The tower serves as the end of the path that the enemies will walk through. In this sense, TinyWars is literally “tower defense.” We expect that this new feature will add an additional level of strategy and fun to the game. Personalizing anything in a game is always fun and having different perks and abilities based on the tower you choose should prove to be another thought proviking gameplay feature.

Items

This feature has not been fully implemented into the game yet. We have an inventory system for normal items as well, not just tower accessories. These items can be brought into the battlefield and deployed in various ways from having more spots to place your units to dropping bombs on enemies.

The number next to each item displays the quantity of the item which the player owns. This feature is the next big feature that we will be working on.

New Graphics

Part of the development of the new demo involves redefining the graphics and in-game visuals completely!

A new summoning system will be implemented into the game that is basically just a visual redesign. The goal is to make it look a lot more “magical” and alive than the previous system.

The GUI has been redesigned and what you can see above is a sketch of the new level design. We still have a little bit more work to do until it is final, but I thought I would drop some images teasing what we have worked on so far.

We also finished this incredible poster design, here’s a speedpaint!

Thank you for following our development and we hope to see you in the next update! Follow us here!

Gameplay Prototype (Closed Beta) Has Officially Begun!

Gameplay Prototype (Closed Beta) Has Officially Begun! 1004 1075 andrew

The TinyWars gameplay prototype is finally in the hands of beta testers! Wave 1 or “phase 1” of the closed beta testing has begun. This means that the beta is not publicly accessible, but as a trade off, when the beta is released to the public it should be polished and ready for everyone!

Beta Testing “Waves”

How appropriate is it, for a tower defense game, to be tested in “waves?” These waves are divided up based on the volunteers who signed up to be beta testers!

wavvv

Refer to this incredible chart to see the difference in wave sizes. (Sorry, pulled all-nighter to finish the prototype…)

Because there may still be game breaking bugs present in the current beta build, we want the first wave to have a small number of people. We want to inconvenience the smallest amount of people in the event some horrible bug comes up and renders the experience unplayable.

Wave 2: Will have a moderate amount of people, if all game breaking glitches and bugs are taken care of, then we will be primarily concerned with “fun factor” and ways we can address that! (approximately week #2)

Wave 3: After considerations from wave 2 and wave 3, the largest group will be able to play the beta and provide feedback. Minor bugs and visual glitches may be addressed at this point before the gameplay prototype is released to the public! (approximately week #3)

Public Release: If all the game breaking bugs are taken care of and we feel that the fun factor is there, then we will release this exact prototype to the public immediately after Wave 3 is finished beta testing!

Have You Played It Yourself?

Of course… I’ve played it so much that I’m sick of it. What? I can’t be sick of it? I guess the game isn’t perfect unless I can play it a million times without getting sick of it right?? Give me a break!

battle-reportttt

This is my battle report. (I have censored out the map because I do not want to reveal my unit placement.)

I have played through the beta one final time before releasing it to the beta testers and have proved that it is indeed possible to beat the beta with a perfect score!

10/10 means that I took no damage. We only grade our players on the final castle health. We don’t rate your gameplay on units, unit diversity, or spending efficiency like some other tower defense games. In TinyWars, the ends justify the means. Do whatever you have to do to end up with a perfect 10/10, you will get your 3 stars!

How do I sign up?

Message TinyWars Game on the official facebook page with your name and email address and you will be added to the beta testing roster! The roster has filled up quite quickly, so you may be added to Wave 3 until Wave 3 becomes so full that we might have to reject some signups.

Fan Art Update #3 TinyWars

Fan Art Update #3 TinyWars 1280 720 andrew

We got some awesome fan art to share with you all today. To everyone who took their time to draw our characters, we thank you very much!

Candy Girl (Amy)

tiny_wars_amy_by_tanaruu-d9yi05f

Artist: Tanaruu
Website: http://tananoma.weebly.com/
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/Tananomachi

Amy, one of our two candy sisters, has quickly become one of the most popular TinyWars characters on many gaming and anime forums. Receiving fan arts of this character confirms it!

There must be something about the Candy Sisters that makes people so attracted to them. Perhaps it’s her innocent, smiling face or the bright colors that remind them of candy.

This fan art in particular looks like a more mature version of her! It’s certainly enjoyable to see our characters in a different perspective and I love it!

Candy Sisters Wallpaper Poster - Copy JPEG - Copy

This is the official artwork of how the two Candy Sisters will appear in the game! If you thought the name Amy sounds suspiciously close to the Japanese word for candy (ame), then you might be on to something.

Melee Character

Easoka Melee Girl

Artist: Easoka
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/easoka/
DeviantArt: http://easoka.deviantart.com/

This is our melee character, she doesn’t have a name yet! If you have any suggestions for names we’d love to hear them!

This character wields a scythe made with a stick and scissor blade. This is a very spooky rendition of her, and the eyes darting off into the pitch black distance makes it all the more suspenseful! This type of scene might be present later on in the game… you’ll see!

Melee Girl - Anonymous

Artist: Anonymous Contributor

This is another render of the same Melee Character. A beautiful, hand drawn face shot! This one really brings out her design as being one of the oldest characters in the group. I can really appreciate traditional artwork.

Fire Witch (Kim)

Haru Tchi Fire Witch

Artist: Haru Tchi

Twitter: http://twitter.com/Harutchi

A very cute chibi rendition of our fire witch character, also another one of our more popular characters! What I like about this chibi is the proportions very much make her look like a “tiny” person! Her size relative to the ladybug is pretty revealing, I love it!

You probably already know what the official design for Kim looks like, no need to post her!

Girly Version of Mary

Loliroripyon Mary

Artist: Loliroripyon
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/Loliroripyon-1001650486525345/

This is the main character from TinyWars, her name is Mary… and she can be described as anything, BUT girly!

It’s so nice to see our characters in a new light, and I think perhaps this could be a peek into her secret side. We’ll see!

Mary Bow Poster V2 (Marked)

Here’s an official render of our character, Mary, from TinyWars! She’s about as ruthless as a little girl can get!  She’s holding her tiny bow, in which she uses sewing needles as “arrows.”

Thank You Very Much!

To everyone who has taken time out of their lives to draw our characters and create something beautiful for us, we sincerely thank you! I have a lot of respect for the people who create fan art for us, and we love to see it! Please do not hesitate to draw fan art of our characters, we’d love to feature it on this blog!
